History of the Restigouche Country Club
In the year 1921 or 1922 the property which is now the Restigouche Country Club was leased from Mrs. Ann Crowley and family by a group of local business men leading to the formation of the Golf Club.
The Club was incorporated on July 6, 1923. The three business men who made the application were: Messers M. Mowat, H.A. Carr and W.F. Napier. The Capital Stock was nine thousand nine hundred dollars ($9900.00) divided into three hundred ninety-six (396) shares of twenty-five dollars ($25.00) each.
The original club house was built in April of 1923 at a cost of two thousand six hundred eighty-eight dollars and fifty cents ($2688.50).
The shares owned by the Crowley family were purchased for the club by H.A. Carr, Secretary Treasurer at some time in 1941 or 1942.
The old farmhouse located on the property served as a Pro Shop and was situated about twenty-five (25) to thirty (30) feet from where the club house now stands. The old barn on the property was used to store the machinery.
Mr. Lou Brown, a golf Pro from England, measured the course and plans were laid out for the operation of a nine (9) hole course.
A gentleman from England, Harold (Lal) Taylor, was hired as the club's first Pro in 1924. He remained Pro until 1949. For a perid of time during World War II, Mr. Taylor returned to his home in England, resuming his duties as Pro following the War.
The first Men's Championship Cup was donated by the Club's first President, Mr. M. Mowat, and was won by Mr. E.B. McLatchey.
The formal opening of the Restigouche Country Club was held on Saturday June 7, 1924.
In April of 1924, a meeting was held to form a Ladies's Section. The first president elected was Mrs. W.S. Montomery. The first Afternoon Tea was held at the Club House on Saturday June 14, 1924.
The first Ladies' Championship Cup was donated by Mrs. W.S. Montgomery and was won by Mrs. W. R. Fitzmaurice.
Only in 1974 was it suggested that a member of the Ladies' Division attend the Board meetings of the Restigouche Country Club.
In 1979, a Canada Works Project Grant of one hundred eighty-one, one hundred twenty-eight dollars($181,128.00) led to the expansion of the Restigouche Country Club from a nine(9) hole to an eighteen(18) hole golf course. Project Grants and hard work since that time have helped make our Club what it is today.
